ELECTRON BEAM TECHNOLOGY COMES TO ISOTRON IRELAND
Isotron Ireland announces the expansion of its Tullamore facility with the introduction of an Electron Beam. Electron beam irradiation technology provides an alternative to the Ethylene Oxide Gas and Gamma Irradiation processes currently provided by Isotron in Ireland.
This expansion allows Isotron Ireland to offer a 'technology neutral' approach for the treatment of our customers' product. Both Gamma and Electron Beam irradiation technologies complement each other with the product requirements dictating the appropriate technology. Characterized by its low penetration and high dosage rates, Electron Beam irradiation performs best when used on low-density, uniformly packaged products.
Electron Beam is a box operation that delivers a fast and efficient method of sterilization suitable for many current and future medical devices: The process also has potential applications beyond medical devices such as synthetic material enhancement and semiconductor enhancement to name a few.
This expansion to the Tullamore facility also includes the addition of two more Ethylene Oxide sterilisation chambers taking the site to a total of 13 sterilizers serving the Irish medical device manufacturing base. The expansion of core operations coupled with ongoing expansion of Isotron's Tullamore ISO-17025 accredited test laboratory brings employee numbers to 80 staff and positions the site as one of the largest sterilization centres globally, and a one-stop-shop for the industry in Ireland.
Communicating the announcement, Mr. Mike O'Neill, Executive Director of the Isotron Group says 'this is one of the most significant developments for the Isotron group. It emphasises our continued commitment to the industry in Ireland and ensures our customers are positioned to develop and market high end medical products into the future. The collective Irish operations are now a centre of excellence within the global Isotron Group.'
Also, commenting on the development, Mr. Brian McEvoy General Manager Isotron Ireland iterated 'how the provision of electron beam provides its clients with a sterilisation platform for next generation medical products. This technology will bring a new focus to the R&D activities of Isotron Ireland which will ultimately deliver real benefit to our customers'.
