Limerick, Ireland, 9 September 2013 Cook Medical, the largest privately owned medical device company in the world, was certified today as an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). The recognition makes Cook the 100th company in Ireland to receive the accreditation from the Irish Revenue Commissioners.
Cook Medical joins a limited group of companies in Ireland who have received this certification including DHL Express Ireland and Irish Express Cargo.
The certification was presented by Minister for Finance Michael Noonan to Cook Irelands Executive Vice-President Bill Doherty at the companys European headquarters in Limerick. The certification acknowledges that a business has met certain standards in its security and management systems and in its compliance with customs rules and ongoing solvency.
Cook Medical will soon become only the third company in Ireland to be approved to hold a European Single Authorisation for Simplified Procedures. This is a precursor to centralised clearance in Europe and is the highest trade regime a company can be offered in the continent.
The scheme was introduced following a new model for increased security of the supply chain designed by the World Customs Organisation. The resulting measures could slow down the movement of goods through customs controls. The programmes intention is to provide AEOs with benefits that, in comparison to non-AEO-approved businesses, lessen the impact of these measures while ensuring a secure and safe international supply chain. Expedited movement of goods through customs channels is of extreme importance to Cook Medical, which ships a wide range of potentially life-saving medical products worldwide from its Limerick manufacturing facility. Cook is also set to increase production in the near future with the opening of its new 16 million Research and Development Centre at Cook Irelands Limerick campus towards the end of this year.
I commend Cook Medical for their participation in the AEO Programme and for making the commitment and investment required to meet the challenging eligibility criteria. I congratulate you on achieving AEO status. With this award, Cook Medical will be recognised internationally as safe and secure trading partners, deserving of special facilitation from customs administrations across the globe, said Minister for Finance Michael Noonan.
Cook Ireland Executive Vice President Bill Doherty welcomed the certification from the Revenue Commissioners, saying Delivering life-changing products to patients around the world is a priority for Cook Medical. We are delighted to be awarded AEO certification by Revenue as part of our wider application for a European Single Authorisation. This certification allows our products to move safely and quickly through our global supply chain.
