Submission papers

In late 2013, the Irish Medtech Association made a submission to the Department of Education and Skills on the review of the National Apprenticeships Model for Ireland. Irish Medtech Association’s submission recommended expanding the existing infrastructure to support industry-relevant apprenticeship programmes while broadening the scope of traditional apprenticeships to include medtech and other growth sectors, thus creating an identifiable national career-path model. A dual-level manufacturing apprenticeship was a fundamental component of this submission, along with the creation of a ‘Centre of Manufacturing Excellence’ to support this model. Attached is a copy of the submission.

In March 2015, Irish Medtech Association made a proposal to the Department of Education and Skills on two proposed apprenticeships:
1. a three year Manufacturing Technician at NQF Level 6; and
2. a two year Manufacturing Engineer at NQF Level 7.

In August 2015, Irish Medtech Association received Category 1 approval from the Department of Education and Skills to progress our apprenticeship, and in early 2016 received 50% funding. In early 2017, we received funding to further progress and promote the apprenticeships.

After three years in the making, we are delighted to say the following apprenticeship programmes are now validated and ready for roll out in 2017:

· Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship at level 6,
· Manufacturing Engineer Apprenticeship at level 7
· Polymer Processing Technologist Apprenticeship Level 7.

We are now in a position to market these programmes to the broader manufacturing community, the manufacturing programmes are occupation as opposed to sector specific and very suitable to Medtech, Pharma, Food and other regulated manufacturing industries.

For the 'off the job' portion of the manufacturing programmes will take place in the following Institutes of Technology:

Galway; Sligo; Dublin; Limerick; Cork; and Waterford.

To ensure viability for each college we need to guarantee 2 intakes per year of 16 students per intake.
